Magnesium Elektron has developed new magnesium alloys that are being evaluated for use in cardiovascular intervention (such as insertion of stents into arteries) and osteosynthesis (surgical procedures that stabilize and repair broken bones by using mechanical devices such as metal plates, pins, rods, wires or screws). For details, please see Synermag® bioabsorbable Technology
Due to its low density and light weight, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, impact resistance and stiffness properties, magnesium is ideally suited to medical equipment applications – particularly when used in portable equipment. Medical industry designers often choose rolled magnesium sheet for press-formed components and plate for machined components. Applications include portable X-ray and ultrasound units, orthotics such as sports knee braces, X-ray cassettes and other medical equipment where the combination of strength and light weight is important.
