Magnesium has a high position in the electrochemical series. This physical characteristic is utilised, for example, in the application of seawater batteries. These batteries are e.g. used in seawater-activated sonobuoys (sonar buoys that locate and track submarines) for coastal defence, portable battery chargers, life-jacket beacons, signal devices in weather balloons and other military applications.
Magnesium Elektron has developed and produces a wide range of electrochemical alloys in plate, strip and coil form to meet all seawater-activated battery requirements. Chemical and metallurgical conditions of these alloys are carefully controlled to optimize their properties.
