The funding was secured by U.S. Congressman Tim Holden and U.S. Senator Bob Casey.  Hart will work closely with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland on this project.

Congressman Holden recently visited Hart Metals to present the good news to the Hart Metals’ employees.  Holden said that he was proud to secure this funding for Hart Metals with the help of Senator Casey and Congressman Murtha.  This funding will stimulate the local economy and help create high-tech manufacturing jobs in the Tamaqua area.  Holden stated that, “In the future, new lightweight materials, such as magnesium, will replace the much heavier materials currently utilized in military vehicles.  Lighter vehicles will result in improved fuel efficiencies and will allow our nation to reduce its dependence on foreign oil”.

According to Dr. Deepak Madan, VP of Technology at Hart Metals, “The funds will be used to install a special atomizer at Hart for the development of new customized high-performance magnesium alloys for the U.S. Army”.  Madan believes that these new materials would be used for the production of lightweight, high-strength components for the next generation of military vehicles.

Mr. Jim Gardella, President of Hart Metals said that “We are pleased to be given the opportunity to work with Congressman Holden, Senator Casey and the Army Research Laboratory.  We look forward to developing these new high-performance materials for the U.S. Army”.

Mr. Christian Morrison, Mayor of Tamaqua, commented on the funding stating that “With decades of experience as preferred-suppliers to the Defense Department, Hart Metals is a worthy recipient of this recognition and this funding would help bring jobs to the region.”

The company has operated in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania since 1966 and has been designated as a critical supplier by the U.S. Department of Defense. Hart Metals is part of the Magnesium Elektron Division. The Magnesium Elektron Division is a world leader in the production of high performance magnesium alloys and products.  The Division is part of the Luxfer Group, an international manufacturer of high performance engineering materials including magnesium alloys, zirconium products and high pressure lightweight gas cylinders.
