Manchester UK - 1st November 2009: Magnesium Elektron UK Graphic Arts sponsors Mat Simpkins' replica Cicada wing. Could photochemical etching be applied to microengineering?
At last week’s 8th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications held in Weimar, Germany, Mat Simpkins an MSc student at Cranfield University England, demonstrated a novel application of photochemical machining of magnesium alloys by producing a replica cicada wing in AZ31B with a line resolution down to 0.15mm. It is believed that the technology demonstrated here could be applied to microengineered vehicles and to biological implant devices.
Simpkins poster was one of two out of 86 submitted by numerous research organizations to win an award at the DGM conference, which saw attendance from over 340 delegates from 26 countries and included over 130 oral papers presented over a 4 day period. Magnesium Elektron’s United Kingdom Graphic Arts business provided some financial sponsorship and provided the high quality magnesium substrate and photoresist coating used in the application.
