Markets & Applications
Magnesium in Automotive
Magnesium has a long tradition of use as a lightweight material in the field of commercial and speciality automotive construction. Racing cars used magnesium parts in the 1920's, but magnesium castings were not extensively used in commercial vehicles until 1936 when the Volkswagen Beetle was introduced. The car contained around 20kg of magnesium in the powertrain and during its peak production in 1971, consumption of magnesium reached 42,000 tonnes per annum. more...
Magnesium in Aerospace
The aerospace industry has long recognised the benefits to be gained of weight reduction by utilising high performance sand cast and forged magnesium alloys for the production of critical components.

Magnesium for Defence
Magnesium alloy products are used for military applications in a wide range of forms including castings, powders and wrought products. more...
Power Generation
The eleven Magnox nuclear power stations have provided a significant proportion of the electricity generated in the UK over the past 40 years, with magnesium alloys being used exclusively as a canning material in the core of the gas cooled, graphite moderated reactors. more...
Magnesium in Space
To reach the rarefied atmosphere of space, the use of lightweight materials is essential due to the massive energy requirements and extremely high costs of transporting equipment out of the Earth's atmosphere. more...
Magnesium in I C T
ICT equipment is providing a rapidly expanding market for magnesium alloys through the application of diecasting, thixomoulding and press forging technologies. more...
PE Plate, Magnesium Photoengraving Plate
Magnesium Photo Engraving plate (PE plate) is used for a variety of applications, particularly in the printing industry more...
Cathodic Protection & Magnesium Power
Magnesium has a high position in the electrochemical series and is therefore used in applications which utilise this physical characteristic, for example, in the field of cathodic protection and the application of seawater batteries. more...
Magnesium for Chemical Reduction
Magnesium particulate products are used as reducing agents in organic chemistry, particularly Grignard reactions and magnesium alkyls. more...
Magnesium in Steel Desulphurisation
Over the last 20 years, magnesium has developed as the material of choice for the desulphurisation of hot metal during the steel making process. more...
Magnesium in Aluminium Alloying
Approximately 15 million tonnes of aluminium alloys use pure magnesium as an alloying element. 80% of the world's production of aluminium wrought alloys and 60% of the world's production of cast alloys use magnesium as an alloying addition. more...
